Salm Partners is currently seeking a Supply Chain Director. 


Manages and oversees all procurement, logistics, and warehousing activities in support of operations.  This includes meat purchases from commodities markets and other sources, and materials acquisitions including ingredients, film, labels, boxes, packaging and shipping supply purchases using best practice procurement processes and supply solutions.  Manages vendor contracts.  Manages the logistics around production including shipping and receiving department and inventory control. Ensures compliance with all safety, food safety, quality, SQF, GMP and USDA regulatory requirements.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Manage vendor relationships; act as primary contact and liaison between vendors and the company.
  • Plan, organize, direct and control activities related to the procurement functions, from intent to purchase through delivery.
  • Ensure an uninterrupted flow of materials to meet production requirements; manage the process for order fulfillment of meat and related products.
  • Actively monitor the market to support buying decisions; analyze market and pricing trends to identify and act on buying opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with meat and ingredients suppliers and negotiate to obtain highest quality at best prices.
  • Design, implement, manage, and monitor procurement reporting systems and procedures.
  • Negotiate and explore creative options for all material, equipment, supplies and services from suppliers and contractors. 
  • Develop and support ongoing supplier management strategy.
  • Develop and maintain a system to evaluate vendor quotations to ensure best quality, price, delivery, and service; address and resolve supplier performance issues.
  • Recruit and maintain supplier partners who provide high quality products and services at a better price while maintaining the highest code of ethics and conduct.
  • Review contracts, bids, proposals, and vendor agreements for legal compliance, price, and acceptability of items to specifications.
  • Evaluate and source vendor options for new products; analyze and provide input into final vendor selections to ensure best pricing and terms.
  • Control, measure and regulate efficient inventory levels of materials and purchased items.
  • Manage the product recall process from a systems tracking and traceability standpoint for purchased supplies and ingredients.
  • Support and follow all safety policies and procedures, and ensure compliance of department personnel.
  • Support the SQF program.
  • Perform other duties as requested.
Supervisory Responsibilities                                                 
Directly supervises the Purchasing Managers, Inventory Control Coordinator, and Shipping & Receiving Supervisor carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies and applicable laws. Interviews, hires, and trains partners; plans, assigns, and directs work; appraises performance; rewards and disciplines; addresses complaints and resolves issues and concerns.

Education and/or Experience                                                
A Bachelor’s degree in Procurement, Supply Chain, Materials Management, Business or related field is normally required.  A minimum of 5 years of food procurement/ agricultural commodity and strategic sourcing experience in a processed meats manufacturing environment is strongly preferred.  Previous experience with supplier qualifying, price negotiating, VMI, and inventory management is also required.  Experience with Continuous Improvement / Lean Manufacturing initiatives is preferred.
Communication Skills                                                
Must possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.  Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as service contracts, vendor contracts, purchase orders, packing slips, bills of material, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, suppliers, contractors, or partners.   Must possess effective negotiation skills and represent the company in a professional manner at all times.
Computer Skills                                             
To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess strong computer with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Experience with MAS 500 or related integrated MRP/ERP manufacturing software systems is also required.
Mathematical Skills                                                   
Must have strong math skills, with the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume; must also have the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability                                                      
Must have the ability to analyze market and pricing trends, and develop, analyze, and negotiate business agreements.  Strong financial analysis skills are required.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the partner will be regularly required to sit and talk or hear, and will l be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.  The partner may lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. 
Work Environment
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an encountered while performing the essential functions of this job.  The partner will be exposed to normal office conditions and usual office equipment like telephone, personal computer, copier, and fax.  They will also be exposed to normal conditions of a manufacturing facility.   There is a wide variation of temperatures ranging from 35° F to 100° F in the various production areas, and the environment is wet and slippery most times. The noise level in the office area is low, and in the production work environment is usually loud.  Partners are required to wear frocks, hearing protection, slip-resistant footwear, and hairnets at all times on the production floor, including the coolers and warehouse.
